Trinity Fusion on Steam Deck

Performance Overview

As Trinity Fusion is an early access title, that means it’s not yet complete and problems are to be expected. That said, the game runs really well on Steam Deck with some minor tweaks.

Out of the box the game will run at 60 frames per second up until you enter a boss fight. There, the framerate will tank into the 30s. This can be helped considerably by dropping some of the settings down (outlined below) and bumping down the resolution slightly.

Do that and you should be in for a smooth ride for the most part. Plus as we’re only dropping the resolution down to 90 percent, you’re not losing a massive amount of visual fidelity. The game still looks great, it’s just not quite as sharp as it could be. A fair trade-off for performance if you ask me.

Recommended Settings

My settings are designed to get 60 frames per second for the most part, or as close to in busy areas like boss fights.

As noted above, dropping down the settings to low and knocking the resolution down to 90 percent is the quickest way to help free up some extra frames for boss fights. I will stress, however, Trinity Fusion on Steam Deck is an early access title, so it’s possible this minor problem could be addressed later down the line.

The game doesn’t look massively different with these settings either. The color still shines through and the extra fluidity is what matters in this type of game.

Bugs and Issues

Expect several crashes, but also expect them to be fixed as development rolls on. I’ve suffered crashes during gameplay and from changing settings in the main menu. It’s not a constant, though. The game is currently very playable.

Verdict

Whether you’ll like Trinity Fusion all comes down to whether you like roguelikes and Metroidvanias. If those are your bag, then the world of Trinity Fusion is sure to compel. The multiversal story is a differentiating hook and one that keeps you coming back for more threads to untangle its weaving narrative.

While the gameplay is a mix of Dead Cells and classic Metroid, Trinity Fusion is unique, and while its influences are clear, its direction is its own.
