Hot off the heels of the Miyoo Mini Flip, it looks like the company’s next handheld will be a modernized Game Boy Micro.
That’s according to the unofficial Miyoo Stock Alerts Twitter/X account (via RetroDodo). The account also claims the Miyoo A30 will launch in April, and that the Miyoo Mini Flip – the company’s take on the Game Boy SP – will follow at a later date.
What Could Be Powering the Miyoo A30?
While Miyoo has yet to make any official statements regarding what’s powering the Miyoo A30, the smaller size of the device does give us some pretty solid clues. For a start, given the original Game Boy Micro was just four by two inches in size, if Miyoo wants something considerably more powerful than that, it’ll need to include a fan to offset any heat that’s generated. As Miyoo appears to be sticking closely to the original Micro design, I’d wager an oversized fan isn’t on the cards here.
That means, if Miyoo wants decent performance without too much heat, it’ll need to keep things fairly simplistic regarding specs. There’s also the fact the A30 doesn’t feature a second analog stick, so we can narrow down the specs even further as it likely won’t be able to play PS2 or GameCube.
So, what am I thinking? I’d put money on the A30 using the same tech as seen in the Miyoo Mini Plus. Take a look at the table below and then I’ll break down what it all means.
Miyoo A30 Potential Specs | |
Processor | ARM Cortex-A7 |
Display | 3.50-inch IPS screen at 640×480 |
Battery | Li-Polymer 3000mAh |
RAM | 128MB |
Storage | 64GB |
Connectivity | USB-C charging, 3.5mm headphone jack |
If Miyoo goes with the same specs as the Miyoo Mini Plus, then we can expect the A30 to be capable of running up to PS1 games. SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, and Game Boy Advance games should all run with minimal issues, while PS1 will work but don’t expect much in the way of upscaling.
That’s the same as what I said in my review of the Miyoo Mini Plus. It’s a great little device, and the low price really helps to make it feel a lot better than it is. As long as you’re not expecting performance on par with something like the AYN Odin 2, chances are the Miyoo A30 could be one of the best budget offerings of the year.
