Driving the news: Gaming handheld company AYANEO has showcased the specs of the Android-based AYANEO Pocket Air.

  • The AYANEO Pocket Air features a high-capacity battery.
  • Chipset is a solid choice that’s perfect for overclocking.
  • Includes rumble support for retro games thanks to SoundTapMagic.
  • Designed for emulation enthusiasts.

Why it matters: AYANEO continues to be the most exciting company in the handheld space. Even though it puts out a LOT of handhelds each year, the company has a reputation for being able to deliver.

The AYANEO Pocket Air packs in the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 for its chipset solution. That puts the device at odds with the Razer Edge in terms of power, but the larger cache size may come into play.

It’s also worth noting the power gap may not be too much of a deal if the console is priced accordingly.

For the screen, AYANEO has gone with a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display that the company says has minimal leakage.

It’s all standard stuff so far – specs! Lots of them! – but what’s caught my eye is the retro cloud gaming support.

According to AYANEO, the cloud service will automatically download artwork, covers, descriptions, and videos for any ROMs you’ve acquired. It sounds a lot like Steam ROM Manager, only Android-based.

Analysis: The AYANEO Pocket Air is shaping up to be a solid Android console. Judging from the specs, PS3 and above emulation may be out of the question, but up to Wii U may be possible.

But, we still don’t know how much the AYANEO Pocket Air will cost. If it’s reasonable, or at least lower than the Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge, the Pocket Air has a solid chance of success. And with the AYN Odin 2 on the way, a smart price point is sure to help.

To join the AYANEO Pocket Air waitlist head on over to the console’s IndieGoGo page or if you want to see the Pocket Air in action, CEO Arthur Zhu recently live-streamed the console on YouTube.

Alternatively, check out the full specs below or take a look at the image gallery to get a clearer idea of what it’ll look like (the color scheme is based on the Japanese Famicom for those who didn’t recognize it).
