Sony’s latest update to its PS5 game streaming console, the PS Portal, has added a cloud streaming beta into the mix.
Before we jump into it, what’s the difference between cloud streaming and game streaming? Basically, for game streaming, you’re playing a game from your PS5 console over the Internet to the PS Portal device. Whereas with Cloud streaming, you don’t need a PS5 console. As long as you’ve got a PS Plus Premium account, you’ll be able to select specific games without the need of a PS5.
“When the update is live, PlayStation Plus Premium members will be able to participate in a beta for cloud streaming on PS Portal, allowing select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog* to be streamed directly from our servers, even without a PS5 console,” says VP of product management Hiromi Wakai.
The update, out now, adds support for over 120 games, according to Sony. The full list of games available hasn’t been released, but Sony points to Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as some of the titles that are available.
Dualsense features — haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, motion tech, and touchpad via the on-screen emulation — are all available as you’d expect. Save data can also be synched across both the PS Portal and your PS5 console.
As for the streaming itself, you’ll be able to play in up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, although that depends on your Internet speed. 720p requires a minimum of seven Mbps, while 1080p needs a slightly larger 13 Mbps. Streaming on the PS Portal, in general, needs upload and download speeds of at least 5Mbps.
