Sony is currently in the process of designing a new gaming handheld that would let owners play PS5 games on the go.
That’s according to a new report out of Bloomberg (paywalled), which states Sony is looking for a new way to bring PlayStation games, and presumably services, to a wider audience while also combating the forthcoming Xbox handheld.

The new device comes at a time when handheld gaming continues to rise in different shapes and sizes. Nintendo remains a market leader thanks to its first-party games catalog and more affordable price point, but recent years has seen devices like the Steam Deck take center stage for many by targeting those who want a more high-end solution.
The PlayStation handheld is said to be in its early stages, meaning it’s still several years out. It’s also possible Sony may not give the project the green light, so be sure to temper expectations.
Thanks to Sony creating new initiatives such as PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the concept of running PS5 games on a handheld device isn’t quite as far-fetched as it sounds. Microsoft has the cheaper Series S which requires more advanced games to run at lower fidelity. It’s possible Sony could be developing a new handheld with that kind of ethos in mind. After all, a handheld game running in 720p at 30 frames per second on an eight-inch screen is still very much playable.
Will the Sony handheld make it to market? As someone who still uses their PS Vita, you can only hope.
